Dutch Company Growing Strawberries in Iceland

A Dutch plant company has started growing strawberries in a greenhouse in Reykholt, west Iceland. The plan is to grow strawberries year-round. According to the manager of Jarðaberjalands (Strawberryland), Astrid Frederike Kooji, the first berries are expected to be ready for harvesting after two weeks, visir.is reports. Kooji says that she hopes that the first harvest will yield between one and two kilograms per square meter. Next year, Kooji hopes to increase the yield to 10 to 12 kilograms per square meter, with a total harvest of 20 to 25,000 kilograms. The total area for cultivation is 2,000 square meters.

Iceland currently imports 360 tons of strawberries per year.
