Autumn Wedding Flower Trends

With its abundance of rich colour and last rays of the summer sun, autumn is a glorious season and a wonderful time of year to get married. We asked two of our florists- Morgan from Old Oak Florists in Ealing and Jo from Daisy Chain Florists in Shepperton- to tell us about the latest trends and must have looks for brides marrying in this season.

Q: What are the biggest trends for autumn weddings?

Morgan: Vintage remains a popular trend for autumn with a lot of brides requesting very natural looking bouquets that aren’t contrived in any way.

Jo: Yes I agree, the vintage look has really returned this year. It started coming back into vogue at the tail end of last year and has continued to follow into 2012. The signature look is very natural and not over complicated.

Q: How can brides get the look?

Morgan: It’s all about choosing the right colour combination and subtle foliage to keep the design simple and not fussy looking. Brides tend to be opting for one flower they simply adore and using it on mass within the design with a few other flower types to compliment it.

Jo: The bride just needs to think about her chosen colour scheme chosen and bring that right through the entire wedding theme. I have found that brides are going off the single stem flowers which were popular a couple years back and opting for a much more British country look.

Q: What type of bridal bouquet is popular at the moment?

Morgan: The domed shaped posy bouquet is the most popular choice for brides and has been for a few years now. Recently more brides are asking for a slight twist on this classic shape so that they can put their own personal twists on their bouquet.

Jo: We have found that very natural looking bouquets are in- ones that almost look like they have just been picked from the garden. Simplicity is key!

Q: What wedding flowers are in season in Autumn? Which are the most popular?

Morgan: The mango calla lily is always very popular at this time of year- both brides and grooms seem to love them. Other loved flowers for autumn are burnt red and orange freesias, gloriosa, hydrangeas, leonotis, and euphorbias. Roses are, of course, one of the most popular flower choices too.

Jo: Nowadays you can have practically any flower you desire. Roses, freesias, oak leaves and euphorbias are always popular.

Q: What colours are popular at this time of year?

Morgan: Burnt orange, rustic reds and creams are popular, seasonal colours; however an equal number of brides want to stick to traditional white and pink bouquets too.

Jo: Lovely rich reds, burnt oranges, warm yellows and lime greens are a great combination for this season.

Q: What should brides consider when choosing their wedding flowers?

Morgan: There’s so much to take into account when deciding on flower choices- everything from the venue to the wedding dress to the bridesmaids’ gowns. Some flowers look amazing to the naked eye but can make a wedding dress look dirty in photos!

Jo: A bride should consider everything from the obvious; the colours of the bridesmaids outfits, the wedding venue, even the design of their cake. Autumn brings in a beautiful array of warm and really rich colours so it is a makes sense to make the absolute most of the season. If it all gets tied in together properly you will end up with a stunning result.

Q: What is the most unusual wedding request you’ve ever had?

Morgan: We did a pagan gothic wedding once. The bride had the most amazing bouquet with luxury flowers which all had to be dyed or sprayed black, with touches of purple. The end result looked wonderful and the photos were superb.

Jo: We had a similar request! A bride once asked us for a black and white theme. At the time I found this really very odd and wondered how we were going to incorporate black into the designs but we found a way and when we got the photos back they looked totally stunning!
