HortiTrends Weekly Comment & News Digest September 7th
- 07 September 2012

This week we carry an interesting Opinion Article - Can Internships in Horticulture Grow Into Real Jobs? by Lorraine Foley. In it she highlights the number of companies who are using the governments 'Job Bridge' initiative. It is being used by companies as diverse as supermarket chains to third level education providers to employ staff for a 6 to 9 month period with the promise of offering them valuable work experience that may assist them with finding longer term employment. It is important that the expectations of both job-seekers and employers are met. Most employers in difficult trading times will be looking at all ways to reduce costs. There is a time cost to them if they are offering a proper learning and experience environment. Considering this, the level of experience they expect from people applying for these positions should not be set too high. The 'Job Bridge' intern should be also realistic about what they can get out of it. You can add a comment to Lorraines's article or if you have an opinion that you want to get of your chest then please send it in.
He's back with another indepth plant article. Hydrangeas are Looking Good This Year by John Lord. Its interesting to note that most photos you see in his articles are from John's own display gardens at their popular Ratoath garden centre. Worth a visit even if you're in the trade.
If you have not been to Floriade yet, then Going Dutch to Find Ideas for the Future by John Stanley gives you an insight into the latest trends coming from Dutch and World horticulture. Worth a read and Floriade worth a visit as there is still time to get a visit in around Hortifair Week.
You can check out the Four Oaks Trade Show 2012 Exhibitor List for this year and also read how it How the Show Began. We will have more news from the show next week.
