The year 2012 marks 100 years of delivery of education and training at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus. To mark this special occasion a one day event, ‘Horticulture 2012’, that will have something to offer everyone involved in commercial horticulture, landscape and amenity sectors will be held on Wednesday 19 September. ‘Horticulture 2012’ will also include seminars, demonstrations, tours and a trade exhibition.

Horticulture is a very varied and dynamic industry.’ Horticulture 2012’ will reflect and celebrate this diversity. The seminar programme covers a very wide range of topics relevant to the current needs of the local horticulture sectors. The topics covered include marketing, crop nutrition, plant protection products, renewable energy, business management and renewable energy.

The commercial horticulture industry in Northern Ireland has always had to be very market focussed. Up to date, relevant market information is vital to any business and especially when marketing perishable products. In relation to this, Lorcan Burke from Horticulture Division, An Bord Bia, will present one of the seminars at the ‘Horticulture 2012’ event.

A key role of An Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, is to provide a source of authorative market research and analysis for the Irish food industry through the publishing of business and marketing reports. Lorcan will give an overview of the role of An Bord Bia in collating market information and highlight the current situation within the Irish vegetable sector.

Another marketing related topic covered during the seminar programme at ‘Horticulture 2012’ will be entitled ‘How to build a brand’. Within this seminar Lewis Cunningham will cover the importance of branding and how it can be used to increase market share. Lewis is the Managing Director of Wilson’s Country and has over 20 years experience in the fresh produce industry.

The Horticulture 2012 event runs from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm on Wednesday 19 September 2012.
