Teagasc Walsh Fellows Programme Overseas Training Awards

Teagasc is a major employer of postgraduate Walsh Fellowship students with some 180 pursuing PhD programmes at any one time. This year Teagasc introduced a new Short-Term Overseas Training Awards scheme for fellows to spend short training periods (up to three months) in approved universities and research institutes outside of Ireland.
The purpose of the awards is to strengthen the research training of the Walsh Fellows, assist them in realising career objectives and further develop Teagasc’s scientific capabilities.
“This is a new initiative under the Walsh Fellowship Programme and we would hope to develop and grow this scheme over the next few years,” said Dr Lance O’Brien, Walsh Fellowships Programme Director.
Welcoming the announcement of the awards, Professor Gerry Boyle, Director of Teagasc, said: “The awards represent another element in Teagasc’s strategy of ensuring that its Walsh Fellows receive the best possible research training through developing linkages with the best universities and research institutes internationally.”
The 2012 awards went to:
- Patrick Cashman, Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research & Innovation Programme, Moorepark who will visit Lincoln University, New Zealand
- Hilda Dooley, Teagasc Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme, Oak Park, Carlow, who will visit Institut für Integrative Biologie, Zurich, Switzerland
- Natalie Heffernan, Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre, who will visit the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL) in Madrid, Spain
- Catherine Mulholland, Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research & Innovation Programme, Grange and AFBI, who will visit Institut für Virusdiagnostik, Germany
- Janaki Velmurugan, Teagasc Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme, Oak Park, Carlow, who will visit The James Jutton Institute, Dundee, Scotland
- Tim Sheil, Teagasc Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme, Johnstown Castle, Wexford, who will visit Rothamsted Research, North Wyke, UK
