Tree-Planting is Highlight for China's Ambassador in Kells

THE Chinese Ambassador to Ireland made an historic visit to Kells last week - and said the highlight of his busy itinerary was planting a Chinese red birch tree in the grounds of Headfort Golf Club.
Town Council cathaoirleach Brian Collins had invited the ambassador of the People's Republic of China, His Excellency Mr Luo Linquan, and his wife, Qiao Li, to visit Kells.
The aim of the trip was to strengthen ties between Yunan province and the town that is home to so many of the Chinese province's trees.
Botanist George Forrest (1873-1932) was an avid collector and explorer and he planted a large number of trees from Yunan province in the grounds of Headfort House and Headfort Golf Club.
Ambassador Luo and his party were given a guided tour of the trees by local horticulture experts, Tim Whitley and Cllr Collins's father, Louis Collins, and the visitors expressed their admiration of the magnificent specimens of Chinese golden larch, juniper and tulip trees, amongst others.
The group then went on to Headfort Golf Club, where they were warmly welcomed by club captain Aidan Foley, president Cyril Cole and lady captain Martha Kennedy.
Aidan Foley then invited Ambassador Luo to plant a Chinese red birch outside the clubhouse to mark the occasion.
"I have not only planted a tree today, but also a friendship between China and Ireland," said Ambassador Luo, who also promised that he would have to return to Kells again to check on the tree's progress.
Under the watchful eye of club professional Brendan McGovern, the ambassador then tried his hand at a few golf putts - much to the appreciation of the gathered crowd.
Local man and European Tour professional Damien McGrane signed the golf balls that the ambassador had used, and then presented them to him. Kells Chamber of Commerce president Geraldine Gaughran also presented the ambassadorial party with a hamper of local food produce to mark their visit.
The ambassador and his party then went on to Kells Town Hall for a civic reception before going to the People's Park at Loyd to turn on the red floodlighting at the tower to mark the Chinese New Year.
