BÖLW: Organic Turnover in Germany 61.5 Billion Euro

The sale of organic products in Germany increased by nine percent in 2011 compared to the previous year. These figures were published by Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW) on Tuesday. The turnover increased from 6.02 billion Euro in 2010 to 6.59 billion Euro in 2011.

"This growth is encouraging, but there is bad news as well. The arrears in the development of the organic agriculture continually increase" says Alexander Gerber, director of BÖLW.

The area of organic agriculture has increased from 990,702 HA in 2010 to 1,013,540 HA in 2011. At present there are about 23,000 companies, which is 1,061 more than in 2010.

The result is that the share of import continues to increase. "This is 25 percent for potatoes and for carrots and apples about 50 percent" Gerber says. "We need 10,000 new organic companies in order to close the gap between demand and supply of local organic products" Felix Prinz zu Löwenstein, director of BÖLW, says.
