CAFRE Food Student Experiences the Value of Industrial Placement

Jemma Walker, Food Management and Marketing degree student at Loughry Campus, reflects on her work placement experience with Moy Park.

After successfully completing the second year of the BSc (Hons) Food Management and Marketing Degree at Loughry Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Jemma Walker undertook a one year industrial placement with Moy Park, Northern Ireland’s largest food company. Jemma, who is from Omagh, outlines the benefits of the industrial placement, “My role in Moy Park was interesting and varied. I had the opportunity to work in the Broiler Department assisting the Field Staff who provide technical support to the farmers. I spent much of my time visiting the farms, learning about the operation of poultry house equipment, stock management and the various hygiene and health and safety procedures relating to food production.

Through my placement I developed an interest in traceability within the supply chain and am grateful that Loughry have assisted me in obtaining an insight into this role as this is where I want to develop my career after graduating.

The experience provided me with an excellent opportunity to greatly enhance my CV and employability. Throughout the industrial placement I learned the importance of developing strong negotiation and listening skills, a practical approach to problem solving, and an ability to work with others – essential ingredients for becoming a successful manager in the food industry.

I know the food industry offers excellent career opportunities and I am looking forward to graduating from Loughry Campus next year and gaining employment in this dynamic industry sector.”
