Coillte Timber Used in Dazzling Irish Exhibit at Venice Biennale Exhibition

Sitka Spruce sourced from Coillte forests in County Cork is currently on display at the Venice Biennale Architecture 2012, part of a key exhibit called The Vessel designed by architects O’ Donnell and Tuomey. The Irish architects were invited to exhibit their 9 metre high stacked timber structure, at the prestigious architecture exhibition in Venice, Italy.

Coillte worked with architects O’Donnell, Tuomey in the production of the 9 metre high structure to ensure the material used met the high standards required for such an event.

The spruce was sourced from Coillte’s forests in Co. Cork and sawn by Glennon Brothers’ sawmill in Fermoy. The Vessel is made up of 5,500 individual pieces and this detailed work was undertaken by GEM construction in Longford who were also tasked with assembling the structure. Nolan Transport shipped the structure to Venice where it is a key exhibit alongside designs by Norman Foster, who designed the Gherkin in London and Hertzog & de Meuron, the architects behind the Birds Nest in Beijing.

Commenting on the exhibit Richard Lowe, Director of Sales and Marketing for Coillte said 'This project has been a superb example of the wood supply chain working in harmony. Coillte has been delighted to bring our experience to bear for such a terrific exhibit. The Vessel is a beautiful structure and really captures the versatility and inherent beauty of Irish wood. The structure is the first thing you see when you enter the Corderie Exhibition Hall in Venice and it has been a real success at the Biennale.'

Sitka Spruce is the main species of the softwood construction industry in Ireland and the UK.

Export sales account for approx 60% of the Coillte Group turnover and 67% of this figure was sold into the UK market in 2011. This marks a significant turnaround from the position less than 5 years ago when less than 10% of sawmill output was exported.

Coillte is continuing to fly the flag for quality Irish timber at timber products later this month when it will be attending the Timber Expo event in Coventry in the UK, along with some of its sawmill customers, promoting the benefits of certified, high quality Irish timber.
