GIY Ireland - On Pest Control and Companion Planting

GIY Ireland - Together We Grow
www.giyireland.com

The next Dublin City Centre GIY will focus on pest control and companion planting: Arjen, from Bogach Farm, a Meath-based company which sells organic seeds will be sharing his knowledge with us. (http://www.bogachfarm.ie/informatie)

There will also be a focus on Elderflower - it's the time of year for some free and delicious cordial so Mary's going to tell us how to find the flower and make the drink. In the pod discussion groups we'll swap seedlings (bring some along if you have some spares, no worries if not), talk about how to protect the small things from the slimy ones who want to eat them before we get a chance to, and then we will Bloom ;)

As some of you know, we were initially asked to grow squash for the GIY raised bed in the shape of Ireland that will be the GIY garden in Bloom this year. But no longer will we squash. It has all changed - now we've been asked to grow red salad leaves: radiccio, lollo rosso

and the like. This is probably a good thing - squash takes an age to get going whereas leaves are much quicker and easier.

In fact, Peter Donegan shows how simple it is here: http://blog.doneganlandscaping.com/2011/04/17/growing-lettuce-from-seed/
(Peter's blog and radio programme, The Sod Show, every Friday afternoon on City FM and downloadable from the interweb are well worth tuning into for anyone who sees gardening as more joyful than serious)
.

On that note, you might be interested in the Country Fair over the May Bank Holiday weekend at Oldbridge House at the Battle of the Boyne Site. On Saturday there'll be a gardening focus where proper gardeners (like Peter) will say their stuff and improper gardeners (like a very cool 15 year old, a guy who can only realistically give 20 mins a week to his garden, and, ahem, me) will show that plants can grow in the gardens of even the most horticulturally challenged. That garden focus will be on Saturday 30 April but the fair will go on all weekend. For more details see Peter's Blog.
