Huge Interest in Tidy Towns Public Meeting

Over a hundred people were present at the Tidy Towns Public meeting held in Tallaght Stadium recently.

The evening began with a welcome from the Mayor Caitríona Jones. Speakers included Padraic Fogarty, Tidy Towns adjudicator, Suzanne Furlong, Public Realm designer, representatives from Lucan Tidy Towns - Kieran McLoughlin and Mairead McGowan - and Warren Phelan, Freetrade.ie.

The information presented included taking the first step – the positive aspects of getting involved in Tidy Towns, examining your area with an objective eye – making the good better and improving the not so good areas. The practicalities were dealt with by the representatives from Lucan Tidy Towns who outlined their programme and some of the projects they undertake. The projects range from litter picking, ivy cutting to old cemetery clean ups. The group meet every Saturday to clean up in Lucan village and more often coming up to judging.

Mayor Caitriona Jones praised the group saying “I enjoy the benefits of living in Lucan and I am well aware of the great efforts that the Tidy Towns group have made in Lucan and its success in Tidy Towns. I know you will benefit from hearing of the Lucan Tidy Town’s experience– the Tidy Town effort is one that we all put our weight behind, I know in Lucan, the scouts, the schools, the businesses, the Council and many more work together to create a lovely place to live, work and visit.”

The presentations finished with a short presentation on Freetrade.ie – the website for passing on material and most importantly getting material free of charge. Questions and answers followed.

The evening also included a display of information stands from the following organisations- Clondalkin Community Recycling Initiative CCRI, FreeTrade, an Taisce’s National Spring Clean and Green Homes Programme, Pride of Place, South Dublin Volunteer’s Centre, Echo newspaper, Social Credits and South Dublin County Council information stand.

The Mayor visited the stands and said “I am also delighted to see such the wide range of information and support that is available to communities and look forward to reading the stories as Tidy Town groups develop throughout the County.”

Following the meeting a number of groups have expressed an interest in attending local meeting to examine the possibility of establishing a Tidy Towns committee.
