Bord Bia's latest PERIscope study findings has shown that children in Ireland are bringing healthier lunch boxes to school. Potato Conference Hears Unviable Prices for Growers Threatens Production

Opening the National Potato Conference, organised by IFA, Teagasc and Bord Bia, in Dublin recently, IFA President Eddie Downey warned that potato production is under threat in Ireland because of a falling share of the consumer price for growers and rising input costs.

Consumers Increasingly Taking Time To Appreciate Food

Coveney Announces Food Harvest Prepared Consumer Foods Groups

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, recently announced the establishment of a group to identify the actions needed to maximise the contribution of the prepared consumer foods sector to the targets set out in Food Harvest 2020. The group will comprise industry appointed representatives but at their request, the Minister has appointed an independent chair.

Inmates' Creative Side Revealed

Prisoners at Northern Ireland's main high-security jail have made hundreds of holly wreaths and other Christmas decorations for charity. Hardened criminals sat down to horticulture classes to establish a virtual cottage industry behind the razor-wire topped walls of Maghaberry in Co Antrim and bring a wave of festive colour to local homes.

HDC Publishes New Water Guide for Soft Fruit Growers

A new grower guide has been produced by HDC for the soft fruit industry outlining the options available for harvesting and recycling water. The new guide, entitled 'Water harvesting and recycling in soft fruit' provides comprehensive information on the range of systems available to growers for collecting water from tunnels, glasshouses and run-off water from soilless substrate grown crops.

‘Possible to Grow Crops’ on Mars

It is possible to grow various plants including crops on the surface of Mars, researchers have said. Experts carried out an experiment lasting 50 days with 14 plants species using artificial Martian and lunar soil, provided by US space agency Nasa.

UK Christmas 2013 – The Winners and Losers!

It's no surprise that Aldi and Lidl were the big winners over Christmas period, with early reports suggesting that the discounters have notched up their best Christmas trading figures on record. Their double-digit growth can be attributed to their improved quality and a broader range of product choice for middle-class consumers. Sales across both Aldi and Lidl increased by 29% and 18% to £1.1 billion and £0.85 billion, respectively, for the latest 12 week period ending the 5th January 2014.
