Teagasc’s Nationwide Series of One-2-One Forestry Clinics

A nationwide series of One-2-One forestry clinics organised by the Teagasc Forestry Development Department will be starting soon.
Farmers and landowners seeking independent advice and up-to-date information on planting and managing forestry and trees can avail of a one-to-one consultation with an experienced Teagasc forestry adviser at one of the free clinics throughout the country in local Teagasc offices.
Whether you are interested in the benefits of planting trees on the farm, assessing the financial implications of forestry or preparing to thin, attending a forestry clinic will provide comprehensive advice and information.
Planting land can have many benefits but is a huge decision for farm families. Getting the right advice and information is critical to making the best decision for the future and attending a local clinic will be an important first step. During a consultation information and advice will be available on all the relevant issues including planting grants and premiums, eligibility for farmer premium and interaction with other farming schemes.
Similarly an increasing number of forest owners are now preparing to thin and may have many questions about how to thin, building a forest road, applying for a felling licence and who will carry out the harvesting and buy the timber. All of these questions can be addressed during a free consultation.
Welcoming the roll-out of the forestry clinics throughout the country, Shane McEntee, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine commented, “These One-2-One Clinics are a very welcome initiative by the Teagasc Forestry Development Department as they provide an invaluable opportunity for forest owners to get targeted, specific advice in relation to the management of his/her forest which is appropriate to the particular stage of the forest itself. I encourage forest owners to avail of this opportunity as the information may assist in decision-making and determining the best course of action to maximise the return from the investment, both in the short and long term.”
Mary Ryan, acting head of the Teagasc Forestry Development Department highlighted the importance of financial analysis: “With strong interest in new planting and thinning activity on the increase there is greater focus on the financial returns from forestry. During the consultation the potential returns over the lifetime of the forest can be analysed using a forestry investment programme specifically developed by Teagasc. The information generated will help the forest owner or those considering planting to better understand the economics of forestry, make informed decisions about future management and assess forestry as an investment.”
Land owners and forest owners attending clinics are requested to bring maps and other relevant information/correspondence. This is a great opportunity to get answers to your forestry questions.
