Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture: Seamus O'Brien

rds_augustinehenry

The RDS is dedicated to attracting the best guest speakers to address not only the current and future issues facing forestry in Ireland but also lectures that will help illuminate the past and show how this area of Irish agriculture has changed over the centuries.

Augustine Henry is one of the most famous of the pioneering plant hunters who travelled to China during the latter part of the 19th century. Henry played a key role in establishing the basis for our present knowledge of the Chinese flora.

'In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry' is the first detailed account of Augustine Henry’s time in China. It tells the fascinating story of his life and work and documents the three expeditions undertaken by Séamus O’Brien and his dedicated team of botanists and horticulturalists to retrace Henry's routes, many of which were in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Three Gorges Dam across the Yangtze River.

Plant Hunter and Author, Mr Séamus O’Brien, is the head gardener in the National Botanic Gardens and is Ireland’s leading expert on plants in the temperate regions of China. Copies of Mr O’Brien’s book ‘In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry’ will be available to purchase on the evening. The RDS and the Society of Irish Foresters present the annual Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture as part of our contribution to National Tree Week.
