Highbank Highly Commended for its Organic Proper Cider

The Proper Cider made by Cuffesgrange’s Highbank Orchards has been highly commended in the Best Organic Alcohol and Non-Alcoholic Beverage category of Bord Bia’s National Organic Awards 2012. This year was the sixth year of the National Organic Awards, which take place during National Organic Week each year. Over 100 entries were received and awards were given in eight categories.

HortiFair Seminars: Up-To-Date Knowledge on Practical Horticultural Subjects

Approximately twenty HortiSeminars will be taking place during the Horti Fair. The audience at these sessions will be brought up to date on a subject of current interest in horticulture within a short space of time. Visitors to the Horti Fair can purchase a knowledge voucher in order to take part in the HortiSeminars.

President Visits IOFGA Stand at Ploughing

President Higgins made a point of stopping at the IOFGA stand at the National Ploughing Championships to discuss the benefits of organic food and admire our local organic vegetables that we had on display. A keen advocate of organic food and farming the gardens at Aras is certified organic!

Sustainable Energy Project Brings Major Investment To Tipperary

The final event of the four-year SERVE (Sustainable Energy for the Rural Village Environment) project in North Tipperary has commenced and continues until Friday (October 5) at the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh. ‘SERVE Energy Week’ features contributions from national experts on sustainable energy and participants in the project, which has been managed by LIT Tipperary in conjunction with North Tipperary County Council, SPIL and the Tipperary Energy Agency.

Food Waste Issue Highlighted


Against a background of spiralling energy costs and pressure on spending power, the issue of food waste continues to be a challenge facing consumers both in Ireland and Internationally. At the moment stop food waste believe that food wastage is equivalent to 87kg’s per capita in Ireland. This equates to around €700 for the typical Irish household.

IEA, Bord Bia to Help with New Foods

The Irish Exporters Association has come together with Bord Bia to help food firm get new products to markets at home and abroad. They said that they are seeking to create a fresh new approach to new product development (NPD) for the food and drink industry. The programme, entitled Food Chains for Competitive Advantage, was launched today at the RDS SHOP Exhibition by Bernard Coyle, Chairman of the Irish Exporters Association Food and Drink Council and Michael Murphy, Director of Markets, Bord Bia.

What is Tree Day?

Tree Day is an annual event, now in its sixteenth year, whereby one day in the primary school curriculum is exclusively devoted to the study and direct experience of trees. All 3,200 primary schools across Ireland are encouraged to put away their school books for the day and learn about trees and the environment in a fun, relaxed and stimulating setting.

Sitka Spruce sourced from Coillte forests in County Cork is currently on display at the Venice Biennale Architecture 2012, part of a key exhibit called The Vessel designed by architects O’ Donnell and Tuomey. The Irish architects were invited to exhibit their 9 metre high stacked timber structure, at the prestigious architecture exhibition in Venice, Italy.

The market for cut foliage, which is often referred to as the ‘filler’ in flower bouquets and arrangements and is harvested from a wide range of ornamental trees and shrubs, is currently worth €500 million in the EU. The prospects for continuing expansion of the small Irish industry, which is currently worth €3.5 million per annum in export sales, are very promising.
