Students on the The Horticulture Foundation Degree course at CAFRE are supporting National Conifer Week which runs from 29 September to 7 October this year by planting a a specimen conifer at Greenmount.

Next Growth to Focus on Home and Garden Rollout
Future expansion at Next will focus on the rollout of its successful new Home and Garden superstore format, the retailer said as it unveiled its results for the half year to July 2012. The fashion and homewares retailer made a better than expected start to the year, with group revenue up 4.8% to £1,640m and profit 10.2% ahead of last year, at £251m.

RDS Science Live - The World Wild Web: Maintaining the Balance
What is a food web? And what would happen if one of the animals in a particular food web became extinct? This workshop is designed to educate students about food chains and food webs; as well as their importance in ecosystem functioning and survival. This workshop encourages students to think for themselves and form their own opinions on the conservation of wildlife, through the use of biofacts to illustrate the importance of conserving the components of food webs.

EASYBASE Product Launch Offers New Sales Opportunities for Stockists.
The launch of a new shed base product, EASYBASE, at Glee last September, will offer stockists added-value sales opportunities. The product, a re-cycled plastic, clip-together tile system, allows the end user easy- to- lay options for shed and other garden building bases as well as paths, hardstanding areas, and so on.

DIY "Poised to be Second Fastest-Growing Ecommerce Category"
DIY equipment and garden and outdoor goods are being tipped to rise rapidly up the list of products most bought over the internet, according to a new study. The number of people considering buying DIY products online is up by 67% Parcel delivery company DPD asked around 2,000 adults in the UK about their ecommerce purchases over the last year and about what they thought they would be buying online in the year ahead.

Erena Wilson 'Died Instantly' after Tree Fell at Kew
A 31-year-old woman who was hit by a falling tree branch at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew died instantly, an inquest has heard. Erena Louise Wilson received "non-survival head injuries" when she was hit by the Lebanese cedar branch at the gardens in south-west London on Sunday.

Find Out Project Details & How Lowaters Nursery Won UK Water Efficiency Award
The HTA are delighted that Lowaters Nursery have won the farming and horticulture category at this year’s UK Water Efficiency Awards for their new rainwater harvesting system. The installation of the rainwater system has enabled the Hampshire-based nursery to become self-sufficient in water.

Food Harvest 2020 Report Shows Sector is “Confident and Ambitious” – Coveney
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney today launched ‘Milestones for Success 2012’, a report on the progress achieved in the two years since Food Harvest 2020 was published. The Minister also revealed that a new report estimates that achieving the Food Harvest targets could deliver 25,000 new jobs.

HTA Discuss Logistical Issues in Scotland with Container Centralen
The HTA held constructive talks at Glee this week with representatives from Container Centralen on levels of service in Scotland following last year’s consolidation of CC depots in the UK. There are now only three CC repair depots in England to serve the UK market. This is causing significant operational difficulties for HTA members in Scotland who now have to arrange and pay for the return of broken CC equipment to the nearest depot in Preston.

UK Industry Calls for a Voluntary Moratorium on Imports of Ash
UK growers are taking a responsible approach and co-operating closely with FERA and the Forestry Commission following the discovery of Ash Dieback (Chalara fraxinea) at a number of UK sites over recent weeks. Whilst the true extent of the spread is determined, the industry is calling for an immediate and voluntary moratorium on ash imports.

Horticulture Students to be 'Champions for Safety'
At the National Ploughing Championships recently the Health and Safety Authority and Teagasc have called for students in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Equine studies to become ‘Champions for Safety’. The students will be trained to highlight health and safety issues on farms and land-based enterprises in a constructive and positive manner.

Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund
Mr Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, announced the recipients of grants under the 2012 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. These projects are co-funded by the Department and Local Authorities. €337,000 has been provided by the Department and €337,500 is being provided by local authorities, bringing the total funding to €674,500 for 2012.

Speakers at the free seminar theatre will discuss and provide practical advice on the latest topics and trends. Show features include the Restoration and Conservation Demonstration Space.
