Keelings Among Irish Food Companies Honoured at Bord Bia Awards

The achievements and contributions of nine Irish food companies were recognised at the Bord Bia Food and Drink Awards held in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham tonight. The Awards, which are held every two years, are designed to reward excellence within the Irish food and drink industry across seven categories – Exporting, Branding, Entrepreneurial, Success at Home, Sustainability, Consumer Insight and Innovation.

During a visit to En Place Foods, based at Loughry College’s Food Business Incubation Centre (FBIC), to congratulate managing Director Paul Clarke on the recent successes the Minister also highlighted the support provided to start-up food companies in the north by CAFRE.

Fresh Produce Retail Value Up Despite Lower Volumes

The total grocery market in Ireland was valued at €8.99 billion to the year ending mid September 2013 (Kantar Worldpanel). This is an increase in value of 1.2% on the previous twelve months. In contrast, the market volume was back slightly by 0.2% for the same period. In the most recent quarter consumers grocery shopping frequency has decreased by 1% but shoppers are spending more per shopping trip.

Coveney Leads Biggest Ever Trade Delegation to Gulf Huge Opportunity for Agri Food and Equine Exports

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, leads a week long trade mission to the Gulf States of Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. A 60-strong delegation representing a range of food and agri services companies, and key state agencies such as Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland and its subsidiary Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, will accompany the Minister on a mission to build closer commercial linkages between Irish and local businesses, and to develop relationships with key Government Ministries and agencies, in this critically important target region for Irish exports

Minister Hayes Opens National Organic Conference

Speaking at the opening of the National Organic Conference in Tullamore, Co. Offaly recently, Tom Hayes TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine acknowledged the work carried out by the National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS), Teagasc and Bord Bia and their commitment to the development of the Organic Sector in Ireland.

Time for Government Action on Retail Legislation as Agriculture Committee Recommends Statutory Code

Ahead of the publication of a report recently by the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture into a Code of Practice for the retail sector, IFA President John Bryan welcomed its contents and said the Government must act immediately on the Committee’s recommendations.

Huge crowds turned out in Marlay Park, Co. Dublin recently for the inaugural National Organic Food Fair. The fair was organised by Organic Trust and IOFGA with support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Amid a carnival atmosphere in the beautiful setting of Marlay Park, some of Ireland's leading organic producers showcased the best of Irish organic food.

IFA President Criticises State Organizations for lack of Commitment to Local Food Producers

Launching the results at the Ploughing Championships recently of a nationwide survey undertaken of public organisations, institutions and agencies into their procurement policy of food, IFA President John Bryan was very critical of a number of respondents for their lack of commitment to local food producers.

Tillage Farmers Consider the Organic Option

Gillian Westbrook from IOFGA discusses potential options for tillage farmers who are considering converting to organics. Tillage farmers are examining the option of meeting greening requirements in the new CAP regime by converting some of their land to organic cereal production. Organic farming association IOFGA has reported an increase in enquiries from conventional tillage growers about converting to organic cereals.
