HortiTrends Weekly Comment and News Digest - July 31st
- 30 July 2013
The general view of the 2013 show was that it was again a success. Talking to exhibitors and visitors, they were generally grateful for the opportunity to meet each other, check out the latest plants and products and talk to each other about the sector of horticulture in general. It was well run and attended with one exhibitor commenting that "there was a better quality of visitor i.e. less tyre kickers."
Best Plant Awards went to Schram (Gold) and Rentes (Silver). Congratulations also to Norman Emerson for 'Best Product Stand.' You can see all the winners here GLAS LATEST NEWS.
The HortiTrends stand was busy and again the general consensus was that people like that they can access information for all the related sectors within the horticulture family on one site, as most do not have the luxury of lots of browsing time.
We also showcased our own new marketing portal for plant buyers and plant sellers. Its called PlantConnector.ie and is a simple resource where PlantBuyers and PlantSellers can meet and exchange information. It can be accessed also via our new Information Portal for Irish Horticulture.ie The feedback given was very positive and we are already implementing some of the ideas given to us by nurseries and garden centres alike. Its a BETA site but is live so dive in and give us more feedback. If you would like to try it out for your business please get in touch.
A big thank you to all our advertisers including those below who support HortiTrends and allow us to plough back our resources into initiatives such as those above. Please support them where you can.
Unfortunately Minister Hays who had been due to attend the show could not. It really was a lost opportunity to get a better feel for the whole sector of horticulture, as GLAS has such a diverse range of exhibitors and visitors. The sector also has a diverse range of needs. What they all have in common is a lack of real commitment from government, to support and develop the sector, unless of course you are involved in food or farming. More resources, please Minister Hayes for agriculture's amenity cousins. Yes we know that funding is scarce. What type of companies receive marketing funding? Find out next week as we publish a list of the companies in edible and amenity who received funding in 2012 along with the amounts plus who received 'Marketing Assistance Programme' (MAP) funding over the last 5 years.
