Why Sheila Gallagher Thinks GM Potatoes are a Bad Idea
- 07 November 2012
"I think to even consider growing GM potatoes is outrageous. As we move into this new century, we have such an opportunity, on this island of ours, to become one of the world leaders in good healthy organic food. It is frightening to think that a small group of irresponsible people can have the power to destroy this. Did the great environmentalist John Seymour work in vain to stop this happening. If we care about our children and our children's children we will stop this madness now. This is the new DDT and we will all pay dearly for it. STOP NOW!
As the Irish economy seeks ways to revitalize itself it is not GM crops that will help but rather gaining a greater understanding of Ireland's biodiversity and protecting Ireland's natural capital must be one of the building blocks of that recovery. I say NO2GM!"
Sheila Gallagher is Galway-based and founder and CEO of Green Sod Ireland, set up to protect Irish ecosystems and educate people to be proactive in the preservation of nature. Green Sod is protecting land in County Carlow – the county where Teagasc has applied for a licence to grow GM potatoes.
