Picking Up the Pieces: Conference on Conservation & Planning

The Irish Georgian Society is delighted to announce 'Picking Up the Pieces', a conference on conservation and planning which will take place on Thursday, 15th November, 2012 at the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square, Dublin 2.

In 2002, the Irish Georgian Society organised an interesting and informative conference on the impact of the new legislation (Part IV of the Planning Act 2000) and, ten years on, considers it worthwhile to undertake an overview of Conservation and Planning. Such an overview is of particular interest as the decade encompasses the years of the Celtic Tiger, which have had such immense repercussions across every aspect of life in Ireland, not least in the built heritage sector. The title of the conference says it all!

This conference will explore the current situation: how planning legislation (and its implementation) and the current economic climate are affecting the sector, and aims to pinpoint not just problems but possibilities. Topics will range from how the heritage sector has fared since 2002 and will include the challenges and obstacles (whether technical, legal or financial) now faced by those seeking to protect and preserve our built heritage. The role of NAMA and other institutions will be discussed as will the urgent need to plan now for the end of the recession.

For the full programme and how to book, please see the Irish Georgian Society website:  http://www.igs.ie/docs/IGS-Picking-up-the-Pieces-Programme [external website].
