Fully Qualified Northern Ireland’s First-Ever Landscape Architecture Graduate

Northern Ireland’s first-ever landscape architecture graduate picked up his master’s degree in June, and urged others to gain the qualifications necessary for a job in the industry.
Phillip Evans, who took a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) course at the University of Ulster, was able to take the course part-time alongside his job as a technician with URS Scott Wilson, an international design and engineering consultancy with offices in Belfast.
“Landscape architecture is one area where there are jobs, but we don’t have enough people here with the right qualifications,” Evans said. “Northern Ireland needs to start producing more landscape architects.”
In his job with URS Scott Wilson, Evans has worked on projects including environmental improvement schemes in parks, schools and streets. “The job includes design input from concept, through detailed design to installation, leading to the creation of a dynamic, high-quality space,” he said.
The School of Architecture and Design at the University of Ulster began offering Evans’ course in September 2008. Although the MLA programme was unfortunately suspended following a strategic review at the school, the course will recommence in September 2012. The school is working towards getting its MLA accredited with the Landscape Institute.
