Dublin Gardens - Shirley Beatty’s Garden

No 18 is a Regency villa, built in the 1830s, which provides the perfect backdrop for a small rear garden, extending to 30 m. Current planting started in 2009 and the garden now consists of herbaceous borders, leading through, under an archway, to a small vegetable garden and plant area. The borders are filled with a wide selection of rare and unusual plants, which Shirley has collected over her 50 years gardening experience and travels.

The general view of the 2013 show was that it was again a success. Talking to exhibitors and visitors, they were generally grateful for the opportunity to meet each other, check out the latest plants and products and talk to each other about the sector of horticulture in general. It was well run and attended with one exhibitor commenting that "there was a better quality of visitor i.e. less tyre kickers."

Dublin Gardens - Lambs Cross Garden

Patricia and Michael Maguire started this garden at Lambs Cross in 1989. Patricia is a fanatical gardener and has a real sense of form and colour when choosing and placing plants. Michael insists that there are as many red flowers as possible, that roses must be highly scented and there are lots of red berries.

Dublin Gardens - Corke Lodge

The house was built in the 1820′s to designs by William Farrell as an Italianate seaside villa. A Mediterranean grove was planted with a Cork tree as its centrepiece. In the remains of this romantic wilderness, the present owner, architect Alfred Cochrane, designed a garden punctuated by a collection of architectural follies salvaged from the demolition of Glendalough House, an 1830′s Tudor revival mansion, built for the Barton family by Daniel Robertson who designed Powerscourt Gardens.

Carmel Duignan, a gardening writer and former television producer, has created a beautiful garden in the mild, maritime climate of south-east County Dublin. Dublin Gardens - Knockrose

Knockrose is situated 500 feet above sea level nestling on the shoulder of The Scalp, a geological feature formed by the melting waters of a glacier. Tom and Trish Farrell are the owners and custodians of this beautifully cultivated unique garden, which is backed by an old mixed forest. Attached to a traditional farmhouse and farm buildings, built on the site of a castle at the edge of The Pale between the border of Dublin and Wicklow, it has been evolving over the last seventy years.

Cuidiu & Rush, Skerries, Malahide & Swords GIYers Squeeze in to the Garden - Trevor Sargent

There are pros and cons to a small garden when a visit by fellow gardeners takes place. The downside can be congestion, but on a wet evening, the comfort of a cup of tea and the shelter of the kitchen is on the doorstep. Eleonor Turner from Cuidiú, the Malahide based family support group initiated the visit to ‘Trevor’s Kitchen Garden’. Soon word got around and a few GIY groups heard about the appointment. In the end the group was quite cosmopolitan, but all Fingal based.

Dublin Gardens - June Blake’s Garden

June Blake is a passionate plantsperson who grows from seeds sourced from all over the world. She uses her own extensive garden to grow and trial these plants. Her home is a quaint listed Victorian Steward’s house located in the old cut granite farmyard of Tinode House. The gardens are surrounded by majestic old beech and chestnut trees and in this sheltered environment she grows a unique mix of bamboos, ornamental grasses and perennials. Many of these plants are for sale in her nursery.

Last Friday (reason why newsletter is late) we visited 7 individual business's including a florist, nursery, irrigation supplier, garden centre, flower wholesaler, paving company and finally Blooming Baskets. (Article Coming Soon) Each meeting started and finished with a handshake and that is the core benefit of events like GLAS. You can develop existing relationships with your suppliers or create new one's if your current supplier is not up to scratch and alway's the opportunity to seal the deal with that all important handshake.
