The suitcase is packed and its off to the BIGGA event in Harrogate UK next week and then IPM Essen the following week. These are great events to get a feel for the positivity of the horticulture sector. We will be there seeking out new trends and opportunities. We also look forward to the impressive Rentes Spring Fair in February which is a must for all trade plant buyers. Come to Rentes for the quality of the plants and stay for the food! Its a very enjoyable and relaxed social occasion also. You get to meet lots of people who put plants, front and centre of their business. The Rentes family are on hand to guide you through an impressive offering. A lot of hard work is put into the event and it shows on the day. Prepare to be impressed as I was last year. See you there. Organic egg producers are in a flap over an European Commission rule on egg packaging that prevents them from labelling their eggs as both organic and free range. All organic egg producers operate free-range enterprises but they fear that if the carton does not say "free range", consumers will assume they are not free range.

Our first week back in 2015 has more or less been taken up with getting new job adverts together for businesses ranging from Landscape, Garden Retail, Nurseries to Sports Surfaces. Deciding to hire extra staff when you are busy has the same effect as deciding to market yourself when you are quiet. Its too little too late! The most successful companies we deal with on a regular basis via www.JobsInHorticulture.ie are the ones who give themselves a lead in time of 6 to 8 weeks to advertise a vacancy or new position.

HortiTrends Weekly News and Comment - Recovery in Landscape Sector Continues - December 3rd

Judging by the number of companies contacting us via www.JobsInHorticulture.ie in relation to recruiting new employees in preparation for 2015, there is a sustained mood of positivity from the landscape sector in Ireland. Every single landscape company I have spoken to are positive and surprised by just how busy the 2014 season has been. With growth comes the new problem of finding experienced staff. Many from our sector have gained new skills and now work in different job sectors while others have emigrated. We are now in a recovering economy and wage rates should begin to reflect this, if we are to retain and recruit experienced staff into our sector.

HortiTrends News Weekly and Comment - Time to travel - September Means Four Oaks, Saltex & Glee - August 26th

We are busy preparing for the many trade-shows that will take place in September and October including the Four Oaks, Saltex and Glee. With Saltex moving to the NEC in Birmingham next year, it will be the last chance to visit it in the wonderful setting of the Windsor Racecourse outside London. Its one of my favourite shows to visit, due to the practical nature of the machinery demonstrations that they put on alomng with the tree climbing trials etc. Somebody in Saltex's head-office has decided that a re-invention of the show was needed and so picked a grassless/treeless site that will just annoy and alienate its core audience even further. Glee itself is also in a perpetual relaunch mode and try's to market itself as all things to everyone with little success. No end of markekting tricks but very little substance when it comes to communicating with its core garden retail audience. The Four Oaks on the other hand does what it say's on the tin. See you there.
