Global Demand for Food Presents Major Sustainability Challenges for Irish Industry
Food production will need to increase by 50% by 2030 to feed the world’s population but this cannot be achieved without dramatic consequences for the environment, according to management and technology consultancy BearingPoint .The findings are revealed as part of the BearingPoint Institute Report which includes a landmark study - “Will your company pass the sustainability stress tests?”

Dublin City Council: Winners of the Dublin City Neighbourhood Awards Announced
Dublin’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Claire Byrne announced Kilshane Court Older Persons Group (Finglas), as winners of the Dublin City Neighbourhood Awards 2012 at a ceremony held in Croke Park recently. In presenting the award the Deputy Lord Mayor said “the people of Kilshane Court really know how to care and have pride for the place they live in.

Eleven Nominations for Horti Fair Innovation Award 2012
The international jury of experts has nominated eleven innovations for the Horti Fair Innovation Award. The ultimate winner will be announced on Tuesday 30 October, the first day of the trade fair being held in the Amsterdam RAI up to and including 2 November. The jury notes that suppliers to horticulture are continuing to innovate and invest, despite the unrelenting economic climate.

Outdoor Sports Facility Officially Opens In Tyrone Area
Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill has officially opened a new purpose built outdoor sports facility in the rural west Tyrone area of Aghyaran. Aghyaran Development Association received funding from the Rural Development Programme (RDP) amounting to £136,500 to build the facility to serve the rural Aghyaran community.

Extensive Rural Public Consultation will Set Policy on How to Create Jobs Locally – Hogan
Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government today (26th September, 2012) announced the establishment of a Commission to carry out an extensive public consultation on the future economic potential of rural Ireland and how best to channel funding and resources between 2013 and 2025.

Minister Hogan Announces Recipients of 2012 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund Grants
Mr Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, announced recently the recipients [ 229kB] of grants under the 2012 Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund. These projects are co-funded by the Department and Local Authorities. €337,000 has been provided by the Department and €337,500 is being provided by local authorities, bringing the total funding to €674,500 for 2012.

Plans Advanced For Irish National Wetlands Park
Fine Gael Roscommon/ South Leitrim Deputy, Frank Feighan, described "as very positive" meeting with Heritage Minister, Jimmy Deenihan, to advance plans for an Irish National Wetlands Park based in Roscommon and Longford. The meeting, which Deputy Feighan mediated, was attended by a number of other local politicians along with members of the National Wetlands Wilderness Park Committee, who have been the key architects behind the proposals.

Call For Attwood To Not Impose National Parks On Communities Without Agreement
Sinn Féin Assembly member Francie Molloy has called on the Environment Minister Alex Attwood to "make it crystal clear that he will not impose National Parks on communities without proper consultation and importantly agreement". The Mid-Ulster MLA said: "Over the summer months we have had a series of confusing signals being sent out by the Environment Minister Alex Attwood on the issue of imposing National Parks on the north.

Sports Minister Hails New Phase in the Development of Casement Park
The Minister commenting on the appointment of designers Mott McDonald and professional consultants the Integrated Consultancy Team (ICT) said: “This represents a significant step in the progress of the Stadium Development Programme. The upgrade of the GAA’s Casement Park; rugby’s Ravenhill and soccer’s Windsor Park have been a key priority for both me and my Department.

The Future of Rural Ireland - Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas
The Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas was launched recently by the Minister for Environment, Communities and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD. The aim of the Commission will be to carry out an extensive public consultation on the future economic potential of rural Ireland and how best to channel funding and resources between 2013 and 2025.

Dr Ruth Carden will give a presentation on Ireland's ancient red deer; this is the first public presentation of Ruth's extensive research (supported by the Wild Deer Association of Ireland) on Kerry's Red Deer and not to be missed. Claims of 'native' Irish red deer herds present in parts of Ireland have been made over the years, if not decades.

Bill Launched On Numbering Of Individual Properties Within Townlands
Sinn Féin MLA Phil Flanagan has officially launched the consultation on his Bill on the Numbering of Individual Properties within Townlands. Speaking from Stormont, where the official launch took place, Mr Flanagan said: "This proposed legislation would give each District Council, if it so wished, the chance to move away from numbering properties on the basis of road names and move to a system where numbers were allocated based on the townland the property is in.

NEWS ALERT - Chalara Disease Found in Young Ash Trees in Ireland for First Time
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has today confirmed a finding of the disease (Chalara fraxinea) at a site in County Leitrim. The disease is known as ash dieback and it is a first finding for Ireland. The disease causes significant damage and has spread rapidly in continental Europe where it is now widespread in several countries.

Teagasc Forestry E-Newsletter Launched by Minister of State McEntee
Shane McEntee, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, recently launched Teagasc Forestry’s new e-Newsletter in the Department’s office at Agriculture House, Dublin. The event was to mark the publication by Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department of its first Forestry e-Newsletter, a free electronic newsletter that will be circulated to signed-up subscribers and will provide updates on forestry issues, Teagasc forestry events and general forestry information.

Parks and Gardens 'Vital' for High Streets
Parks, gardens and trees are a 'vital part' of what makes a town centre inviting to visitors yet are often overlooked, according to new government guidelines for town planners. The guidelines are part of the government's drive to revitalise town centres in the wake of an independent review by retail marketing consultant Mary Portas last year in which she said high streets have reached crisis point and need urgent reform.
